Plz, I really need the Mk3 width

Postby todoterreno » Sun Jul 16, 2017 8:31 am

Sorry, I wanna go for my first van this week , a 1997 SWB Transit , but i need to know the total width with folded mirrors , my garage door's 87 inches / 2200mm and I know Transit width without mirros (chassis width) is 1972mm , and about 2500 with mirrors.

I'm not an expert driver, do you think i could get it in okay?

once its in is there room to open the door. dont forget to check height.

putting a van in a garage is a bit of a novel concept ... where you going to keep all the stuff that lives in the garage?

i built our garage 30 odd years ago ... never ever had a vehicle in it.

Thank u, but there is no walls in the garage, just 4 concrete columns, so i just need to cross the garage gate (which is 2200mm wide), that's why i need someone with a metric tape to measure the width with folded mirrors. I really want to buy it!

Well, I can tell you that my Mk5 (Transit 1995-2000) used to go through a 6' 6" (~1950mm) width restriction with the mirrors being above the posts, or the drivers side folded in.

2200mm should be a doddle :P

2008 Mk7 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.2 TDCi - Also Vantunered

depends on mirror arm length on a Mk5 .

short van type or longer tipper type.

either fold in so body width won't alter. :D

if youve got a tipper body, usually third party produced, it could be wider than the cab, they often are , then the rear body is the widest part of the vehicle , making the folded mirror width irrelevant.

i assumed we were discussing std factory van bodies. :D

i measured my MK3 ambulance yesterday, but by myself and with the tape across the bonnet, as space was limited..

I wouldnt want to drive it through less than 2050mm with mirrors folded. I think the width is a couple of cms less than this, but 2m 5cms is a decent guide.

For future reference, to get an accurate width just take a piece of string with an ordinary hex nut or other small weight on the end. Hold the string at the widest point and mark the ground where the weight rests. Do the same on the other side and then measure the distance between the marks.
