mk5 axle ratios

Postby gavcarter » Sun Jul 16, 2017 7:39 pm

HI, my mk5 according to etis has a 4.56 ratio. 2nd gear maxes out about 30mph does this sound about right or could it have been changed?
ive only been on dual carriage way so far and I reckon motorway would be revving its tits off!

thinking of having the diff changed for something a bit better.
It will be a 7 seater, but I don't think it will ever get used to its full payload or for towing

4.56 on a Di, will cruise comfortably at 60-65 mph all day and isn't too noisy. It will do up to 85mph, but with a danger of ears bleeding.
You'll struggle to find a good 4.11 diff, which is the next one down(or up?) but more to the point, the standard 70ps will struggle to maintain speed in 5th, on a motorway with hills. You'll also need to change gear much more frequently around town.
If you have a turbo, then all of the above won't apply
1994 Mk4 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (R.I.P.)
1997 Mk5 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (Gone, but not forgotten!)
2004 Mk6 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.0 TDDi - Vantunered (Also gone)
2008 Mk7 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.2 TDCi - Also Vantunered

Thanks Alltransit, maybe she needs a good service then too as it does feel painfully slow despite checking the torque sleeve and winding on some smoke. She drives with a light haze when you boot it...
I'd love to do a turbo conversion on it

Had her out for a good blast. She will accelerate up hills on motorways, granted they not the steepest of hills but I've passed a few trucks that needed to slow down.
She will cruise at 60-65 as you say and I've had it up to 80 on the flat...
It's just too many revs if going any sort of distance, I have heard of mk6 axles being used? Or at least the crown and pinion? Is this right?
