Im looking for advice regarding my sputtering motorhome. It is a 1990 transit autohome with 2.0l pinto engine with a weber carb ( so im told)
l was told by PO it needs a New carb and i accpeted this when i bought it I have had a look and been told i have a weber 28 tldm with a manual choke conversion.
The symptons are judderring sputtering under load..if i easy of the pedal it recomppaes it self. Sometimes it wven requires me to hear down its that bad..the power just is not there at all
Previous owner jas changed alternator, distributor, coil.and had the carb set up.
Im happy to get a new carb ( need recommendations for someone to fit it ) bit wpuld want to ensure everything else osnruled out. Also i have a 'thingy' that i dont know what is that just pulls out of the engine - which frightened me but might be perfectly normal Not sure how to post pics
Used to have a pinto 2l. The correct carb is the ( oft denigrated ) VV which when set up is perfectly adequate. The correct weber is the 34 ICH with the fitting kit. You'll need the original inlet manifold. Make sure you have the hot air collector on the exhaust manifold connected to the air filter or you WILL suffer carb icing.
The blue thing is the positive ? crankcase ventilation .....thingy. It will upset your idle if it's not working properly.
Best you can do is get the Haynes transit book for the petrol engined vehicle. (not the diesel).
.....will the 34 ICH bolt straight on with my manual choke ? No, different original manifold. 34 ICH has manual choke, also has an adaptor for the air cleaner.

Worth finding someone to do a compression test on the engine before you go too far The thing that you have outlined in blue pulls out of the engine block...worth giving it a clean out and checking the pipe is clear, they can clog up with stuff from the engine
They are easy but it takes two people and it helps to have someone who understands the figures...but I'm not great at mechanics. You can get a remote starter, that helps. But it's well worth running the test and cleaning everything first. If you can find a friendly mechanic to help you can set out a plan for bits which helps. Doing it yourself will give you a better understanding though.
Is it still running a points ignition system? If so I would replace the points and condensor as well as a new set of plugs.
It could possibly be a blockage in the fuel line somewhere. Have you tried opening the petrol filler cap when it's spluttering to see if that solves the problem?
Gosh ..thats all given me some thought - it has a coil and a distributor..so does that mean points? Probably . I need to check the haynes manual for what they look like and find them.
As for oil smell? Wow never new you could diagnose studd by oil smell-im impressed.
I cant really open the fuel cap when its sputtering because its only when im driving and underload revving in the drive is totally fine .
Timing - i totally dont have a clue..anyone recommend local old school mechanic i. The derby area..? I just came back from wales lots of juddering and struggling under load. Also noticed a throaty sound which sounds like the exhaust manifold !!! Also measure the fuel from full to full 3.5 miles per litre !!!! Oh my god ..i cannot afford this thirsty beast
