Fast idle

Postby rick blue » Fri Aug 25, 2017 10:45 am

Hi guys, my van has started idling faster than normal. Start up engine from cold, idles at 900 rpm, after a minute it speeds up to around 1500 rpm. Epic diesel pump, auto transmission, 95000k on the clock. Red engine light has flickered on here and there, fly by wire accelarator. Anyone help me out?

Sounds like it's going into Limp Home Mode.
Cambelt due :?:

Other possible causes for higher than normal idling is a faulty injector.

These faults are easily identifiable with a Lucas Laser 2000 fault code reader.

Thanks Andy, will do the cambelt replacement as you mentioned, wouldn't hurt. A little too far away from Transitmania as I live in Perth Western Australia haha. I will also check out access to a Lucas Laser 2000 fault code reader. Thanks again.

Replaced timing belt to no avail, still got a fast idle, engine light on and in limp home mode. Not going to the dealer to get ripped off. Anyone in Perth WA with a laser 2000? or one I can buy from E Bay? Aaarrghhh

Thanks again Aba, You couldn't quote me a part no could you? All I see on e bay is laser 2000 for other vehicles and not my TD Transit. Unless they fit all. :?
I did manage to get mine tested using Snap on diagnostic equipment. Came up with fault codes P1173, Rotor Calibration Fault and P1177, Synchronisation fault. The man tells me only Ford can clear the fault numbers.

Hi.
i had something similar in my previous transit which was with epic pump.
the revs stayed on when changing gears but there were no engine light on and no limp home mode.
but i took the accelerator pedal out of car and if i remember right there is two micro switches in that pedal.
i measured them with multimeter and other one was bad( that one which touches when you lift foot off) , i bought new switch ( just something quite similar for that original) and made bracket to bolt it on to pedal and soldered wires and it started to work.
but like i said it was not like yours.

Thanks Bobbari, pedal is on the list. Mine is auto box so doesn't rev when changing gears, only when it's in "Park mode"

I wouldn't get too hung up on the fault codes, I think the epic will store a lot of codes but only go into LHM if a serious fault is present on startup or whilst running, so you wouldn't be stuck in limp if you fix what is causing it but don't have the codes cleared.

Thanks DodgeRover. You could have hit the nail on the head. After a few test runs van is running great, no red warning light. Must have been the Timing belt as pointed out by Andy G earlier in the piece. Still idling a bit high in Park mode but can live with that for the moment. Probably the pedal as was pointed out, 95000 km's though? Learnt heaps. :D

oops spoke too soon, red engine light comes on after about 10 km's and idle back to 1500 rpm. Seems to happen once engine has warmed up.

Ok, all fixed. Thanks to MinorMatt for putting me in the right direction. Turns out the multi pin plug and socket on the back of the Epic Pump had water in it, blew it out with compressed air and got a wet face. Van now running like a dream. Phew. Thanks for all your assistance guy's :D

Hi all

I seem to have a problem similar to thread starter here. When my engine heats up, idle speeds up from 650 to 900/950.

My engine is a DI with Bosch pump. Vehicle is from 12/1998, has only covered 45.000 km.

Diesel filter is new.

Is it likely to be related to the age of the timing belt?

Best regards, Jesper Yde (Denmark)
