2.5di Banana

Postby wizard74 » Tue Sep 05, 2017 3:33 pm

Hi guys ,
Hoping someone can help.
Have a 2000 2.5di banana and have done full service, timing belt, water pump etc.
Still pretty slow, struggles to get over 55mph on main road and fuel economy not the best. I have a feeling that the injector pump timing may be slightly off and have no idea what the valve clearances were last set. My question is what do I need for pump adjustment. Just dti gauge or other bits and pieces. Also would adjusting fuel pump and adjusting valve clearances have a big bearing on anything ?
Sorry but pretty new to all this,
Learning as I go !

I assume you did fuel and air filters?

Is the EGR blanked off?
adjusting the valves will help if they are "out"
cleaning the "nannas" (chances are they're full of EGR gunk and restricting air flow)

tweek mid and top end fueling on the Bosch pump this helps a lot.

Do you know which diff is in the van?

Was the van sluggish prior to changing the belt?

Has always been sluggish.
Since I got I have blanked egr, timing belt. Water pump. Full service. All new filters all round,
Have cleaned out the nannas already, weren't actually too bad.
Is fuel pump adjustment just the top cap that I remove and give one turn ? Is there another adjustment somewhere else ?

You can adjust the outer cable down at the pump .Pull the outer cable and check you have about 1/8 inch of travel before it pulls the lever on the pump

Checked throttle cable and fine, have turned the fuel pump up one turn under the top cap. Is there a different adjustment somewhere else also ?

To turn the fuel up remove the adjuster from the back of the pump, remembering to measure where it was set first.
Remove the anti tamper ring. You will probably have to grind this off. Re fit to where it was set originally then screw in until it starts smoking. Screw back out until the smoke stops. A small adjustment can make a big difference. Try one eighth or quarter turns. This won't help your fuel consumption mind. ;-)
The screw on the top can be adjusted more. Like half a turn at a time. I found this made more difference with general running, around town etc.
Double check the pump timing first though and get the injectors checked.
mine is a high top, long wheel base 190, lined and insulated, carrying a few tool boxes so pulling a bit more weight than normal and it cruises nicely around 50/55. i have not tried topping out but there is more to go. I wouldn't expect much more than 60/65 though.
