Mk5 Roof rack/bars on High top (fibreglass)??

Postby soulysurfer » Fri Sep 08, 2017 1:58 pm

Who knows about roof bars/roof rack for a high top fibre glass MK5?
I want to fit some but the distance to rain gutter is way bigger than the size of the stands for the rack that came off my mk6. Are the ribs under the roof strong enough for bars to be attached to?

Haven't seen any products out there when searching on the tinterweb!!

Can't say for sure what they would be like in use.
But I can tell you I bought a high roof transit out of the scrappy for parts once and it had a car sitting on it's roof when I looked at it. Definitely did not collapse and only minor damage to the fiberglass

Yep I agree I remember years ago in the breakers yard seeing a high roof smiley being lifted from the back doors with a big forklift and the roof bars did bend upwards a little but it was lifted and moved and was complete minus the rear doors so they are bloody strong because the whole van was on the point of the forks on only 1 of the roof bars talking all the weight with the way the van is nose heavy it's wasn't lifting level.

They're almost certainly strong enough but do you really want to drill holes in the roof and then have to try and seal them?

I'd make up some tall support brackets to fit your existing roof rack to the gutters or buy the right roof rack for the van.

I bought Thule 420 and modified it with aluminium bars.
