1988 campervan

Postby charliejo » Sun Sep 10, 2017 7:55 am

driving home from the highlands we got as far as dumbarton and a slight cheep apeared when releasing the clutch from 4th to 3rd a few moments later a burning smell of burnt oil,we pulled over and had a coffee, after about 20 mins set off again no cheeping or smell so happy bunnies well till just before j40 on the m6 then thud a large thud and the sound of shrapnel bouncing off the van somewere :? felt like being a pilot flying through flak  then everything died but motor kept running, pulled onto the hard shoulder and no electrics not even hazzards phoned recovery ,young kid turns up! think the van was older than him :D and after the usual nonsense blurting out of his mouth oh your gearbox is blown etc we proceed home on a low loader :( anyhow i had a quick look under bonnet at home and discovered the main battery fuse was completely obliterated  which makes me think its not the clutch but will check later, has it been known for an alternator to implode :D :D

A good-looking camper you've got. I hope you manage to fix everything and can head back to the highlands again.

Is the belt sufficiently tight? Oil on it?

Join the club! My TDi squeals at start-up, judging by the rev counter not rising it's the belt slipping on the alternator. (rev counter driven by alt.r) It stops after 'alf a mile or so. Various cures have been tried, including rosin from violin bows. If it carries on try tightening the belt a touch. Guess you could polish the alt.r pulley, must be rusty by now. Mine can squeal for England, sod it.
