Dismantling mirrors

Hi all,

I have a Mk 5 based motorhome which has long arm mirrors. I would like to convert these to electric operation and have sourced two short arm mirrors and the required switch. I'm hoping that the 'gubbins' in the mirrorheads is the same and can be transferred from one to the other. Now comes that difficult bit. I've had a go at prizing the mirror assembles apart but chickened out when I thought I may be about to cause damage. I assumed the casings snapped together. Is this so? Does anyone have any tips for opening up the casings and has anyone else done this job?
