Pinto 2.0 vs 2.0 dohc

Postby smokythc » Wed Sep 13, 2017 2:42 pm

Hi been offered a transit dohc mini bus and was wondering how these engines compared to my 2.0 pinto in a mk3 recovery truck?
Would It be worth me swapping engines?
Is there much power gain?

I dont know if the engine swap is worth it but the dohc engines are very economical and quiet compared to the pinto , if you had an lpg conversion as well it would be as cheap as chips to run though .

When the dohc came out in the Seirra I worked at a construction firm we had a fleet of about 40 most of them doing high mileage compared to the pinto we had less problems the only time I had the head off one was on my brothers xr4x4 when the electric fan switch failed and the headgasgett whent he also had a rs2000 same basic engine but with 16 valves that really did get some stick and never had any problems at all

I have a 2.0 dohc mini bus with Vialle Lpi liquid phase injection, although lpg is cheaper it is still not as cheap as chips, I drive flat out all day at 150kmh some times and it can use as much as 22 litres per 100km, normal driving get about 14 litres per 100km. I have two tanks and can take 110 litres lpg but it doesn't last long. It works out about 30% cheaper than diesel and probably 50% or more cheaper than Petrol, plus the stigma of driving a dirty diesel is absent. Everywhere in Germany you can buy Lpg it wasn't the case a few years ago and think it will be the lesser bad of the fossil fuels. That's why I am so keen on hanging on to my Van. My 2.0 dohc is excellent in my books never had a problem runs nice and loads of power not many Vans on the road that can keep up with it, especially sh1tty Vitos and Vivaros.

Have to drive from Norway to Poland around 1200kms with a 16 hour ferry crossing, a total 32 hours, I haven't time to drive slow :) even local driving within the speed limit and like a diesel have never managed less than 14l. per 100km. I doubt you could get 10 litres per 100km on petrol and you always use more gas. Even the saving I make on Lpg manage to lose to fines I get in Germany for speeding :(

No Scott I disagree , I had 3 petrol smileys 1 a swb shr with a 4.54 rear diff which was capable of 12-13 km per liter on petrol 10 k litre on gas, even more impressive was my hi cube with a 175 litre gas tank and a Prinz gas system, I could fill in Barcelona ( @ .27 cents a litre ) and get all the way back to Calais and then nearly to my house in the UK with out having to stop . It would do 9km a litre (24.5 mph) on gas and on petrol it would do 11km a litre (29.5 mpg)
First I thought I had made a mistake but then realised I had not used any petrol anyway . Just keep the speed between 100 and 110 km an hour and it will learn to use a lot less fuel . I only wish my mk 6's could do the same sort of figures , although my jumbo gets close to that

Ok, lets see I will drive from my house in Poland to see my nippers in Holland, a distance of about 1050km then on to Hirtshals in Denmark, again about 1000km to get the boat to Bergen, Norway. Going to use my new new cruise control and drive like a diesel no faster than 120kmh. I tanked today and drove home with a full tank of gas about 20 km from 56l. @110kmh on the autobahn you would be so slow as to be dangerous lol. even at120kmh thats crawling :D

Well we both have long trips this week , maybe traffic is lighter where you are going to and from ?
I will be filling up my fully loaded mk6 transit luton in Birmingham driving to dover 330 km to catch ferry to calais or dunkirk then on to antwerp 200kms I will then fill up at 40c a litre again and drive to Toulouse and Barcelona and then on to Valencia 1780km . If I get more than 6.5 km a litre I will be happy but I doubt I will ever reach 110kmh unless I drive off a cliff .
Got to say though impressed by you fitting the cruise control , how much was it ?

Driving from Kedzierzyn kozle. Pl to Helmond. Nl. 1053km today. Sitting in Burger king at the moment as starving. Drove at 110 km with the cruise control and like I said 16 to 17 litres per 100km. 5.8k. And 6.03km a litre. Got all pics to prove but will post them tomorrow. Lightlyoaded 110 litres gas and full tank petrol. The cruise control bought from Conrad electrics Pl. Paid 600zl or about 120 pounds. Works great. Recommended and easy fit. Have a safe journey.

Hi Scott hope you have a good trip , showing off though bragging about burger king !!
I would have your codes read, no way I should be getting same economy as you in a fully loaded Luton ?
I suspect that the lambda needs looking at especially as you only going 110km hour which is 68mph most of my trips include going through France and using the peage motorway s is way to expensive for me so I am constantly going through the gears where as you are on an open road with a much smaller lighter vehicle going a constant speed .

I have done my calculations and used 189litres for 1100km and its a respectable 5.82km per litre or 17.2 litre per 100km. I will call you out on ever achieving 10 litres gas per 100km . You couldn"t get that with the same engine in a scorpio. Look on Spiretmonitor. de and search scorpio and compare their consumption. And that was a mixed drive of a constant speed of 109kmh at 3700rpm and 120kmh at 4000rpm. Total cost of trip around 85euro. My engine is running perfect. The consumption is what's expected.

My trip was mixed road with a lot of hills and into headwind. At one part of the drive upped the speed to 120kmh and used the cruise control. Got 255 km for 52litres gas, which is more than I usually use on the same stretch using the accelerator and gears. Usually I don't run out and tank in Essen. On the spritmonitor site the average consumption for a Galaxy 2.3 is about 14l per hundred. And when you look at some of their trips they also get up into the 19litres per 100km when giving it the beans. I would like to see hard proof of your consumption to be convinced.

Hi Scott the proof was in the first of the links that you sent me , Peter with the transit 80 eas returned
942km for 84 litres of fuel ( 11.21 km per litre) and he also did 657 kms for 50 litres (13.14 km per litre)
Those were the first 2 results that I saw which bares out what I said which is they are capable of more than 10km per litre .
