Did it get stuck in flood water? Water backing up exhaust can seriously damage the health
of your engine!!

I bought a camper with a engine defect, the previous owner said that the crankshaft is probably broken.
I already prepared in advance that it would probably be necessary to replace the engine.
I said to myself, let's put the engine apart and see. then a  what the hell?
How the previous owner did this i don't now, I have not seen anything like this before.

When I took of cylinder head the cylinders were dry ( no trace of water) so I do not think water is the cause

My mate also did that to his campervan it was on a van he brought from work it had a genuine Ford exchange engine in it and not done mega miles on it only about 65000 mls he used to slog it in high gears just plodding about he never really wound it up that may have been the fault you have

Well, a conrod bend like that, means that either the piston or the crank, suddenly stopped. Usually the piston, either through a hydraulic lock or a dropped valve, but as you rule both of those out, my money would be on a blocked oil passage, starving the big end or crank bearing of oil?

crank journals appear intact with no obvious scoring and have a thin film of oil.
don't know what the shells looked like though.

Bent con rod is...........
hydra lock or it's fired on the cylinder whilst the piston was on mid upstroke for whatever reason.

Wanging a load of sniff and go (as mentioned) can lock an engine up.

Timing way out or water/oil ingress into the cylinders.

Water wouldn't necesserally be present in the cylinders (depending on piston ring condition)

Just my idea...
The crankshaft could be broken due metal fatigue stress vibrations...
Ones the crankshaft separated in two, the shaft has pushed / slammed the piston against the cilinder head.
Doing this, it could has bended the connecting rod and breaking the crankshaft bearing bolts.
I have sailed on a tug boat, where the crankshaft had been broken and after woods welded back together!!
Needless to say that engine was a pain in...(You know where)
