Hi, the exhaust pipe on my '91 mk3 camper has sheared off. It started life as a petrol engined MoD ambulance and has been converted to what I think is a '92 NA 2.5di. Not the banana engine. It always looked to me like the exhaust pipe is too small for the size of engine, Certainly when I had a 98 Transit van it had a much larger bore pipe. The pipe on this one is 1 3/4" o/dia (45mm). Does anyone know if this is correct for the mk3 di Transit - or has it still got a petrol exhaust system on it?
The pipe sheared just where front and back pipes join - so I will probably be able to repair with a sleeve, but I'm wondering if the engine is being choked by back pressure from the small bore of the exhaust. The camper is a brilliant machine and drives very nicely with power steering and very smmoth ambulance suspension ( twin rear wheel lwb ), but performance is very poor with it not happy being pushed beyond about 48mph - so any increase in power would be very welcome...
