Removal of Oil Pan / Sump

Postby Only4Wheels » Tue Oct 03, 2017 6:43 am

I have a Ford Transit 1997 Turbo Diesel. Engine 4EBV. I am thinking of removing the oil sump. I can't get a gasket so I was going to use a silicone bead around the pan finger tighten, let it dry and then tighten. Any recommendations for a suitable silicone product?

I have had a look the pan and it may be blocked by the suspension. It also seems hard to get to the bolts holding the pan on at the rear. Has anyone done this for this van and knows what is involved in removing it? Can be removed without jacking up, with jacking or removing any other parts?

I was also considering replacing the diff seal with silicone as well. No access issues here but is there a product that will do both?

Any tips?

Thanks

For decent access to the rearmost sump bolts you need to unbolt the steering rack from the cross member and pull it out of the way.

Gaskets for both are readily available and cheap.

If you can't get a gasket for whatever reason.
I couldn't get one quickly enough and used this stuff to get me away.

It's held so well on my diff plate I haven't bothered replaceing it with the propper gasket.

It also makes a good exhaust joint sealer :D
It's actually cheaper than a similar size tube of RTV.

Thanks keef and gotgcoalman I know its been a while I forgot I posed this, sorry. I didn't get any email notification that someone had replied to remind me. I have a gasket now and still waiting to do this. Which I'll do after the garage changes the timng belt. It' snot high on my priority list and I guess I'm avoiding it a bit.
Thanks again

I am thinking to replace the gasket also this weekend. Is it easy to just unbolt the steering rack? do i have to remove it completely? It is easy to do it alone at the side of the road?

Hi George,,
The information I have is on vehicles with rack and Pinion steering. Undo 2 nuts and bolts securing the steering gear to the crossmember and move it as far forward as possible. You may have to remove the clutch housing front cover if fitted by iundoring 2 bolts. If a turbo remove the return pipe from the sump. The rear 2 bolts should now be accessable.

I My steering gear has 2 small pipes that are clipped to it which worries me a bit as I don't see how they move. Also there is no mention of the steering rod that connects to the wheel being removed so I'm not sure where that gets it play from.
On engines with a one piece gasget apply sealing compound where the rear oil seal carrier and engine intermediate plate contact the cylinder block.

let me know how you go

Cheers
