pinto engined camper-a good buy? advice pls

Postby zummerzetman » Sat Nov 04, 2017 10:17 pm

Hi fellow transit fans, I've seen a cheap low mileage f-plate camper with 2.0 pinto engine and worn 5 speed box. I'm tempted but worried about mpg, reliability and parts availability. Any of you got experience of running one? Any advice welcome. Thanks. Zummerzetman.

Well, I wouldn't ask jonochap that's for sure. I had a pinto mk2 minibus and she was very fussy until we put a vv back on her. Ran like a watch after that, but had an annoying battery drain, so we isolated the battery lol

I had a 2.0 litre van years ago, it only had 60k miles on it, I went around Europe in it and it averaged 32 mpg.

I run a pinto engined Lwb van, nothing wrong with the pinto but a bit lacking in power/ torque.
Good thing is that you can go within the M25 LEZ zone and aren't subject to punitive additional parking chàres for diesel vehicles.
Bad news is 18mpg average, LPG makes it about the same cost as running on diesel.

Thanks for your responses. The one I was looking at has now sold, but might look out for another although diesel is probably a better bet as it will mostly get used on rural routes. 8)

i bought a small wheel based ex BT box van pinto engine converted to LPG ..the petrol tank straps corroded so took tank off and now runs exclusively on lpg...when they say you need petrol to start well that isnt true with these old pintos..they will start on gas first turn of the key if everything is set up right even in sub zero temperatures...when i bought mine it had 64k on the clock...the engine lasted until 204k until valves burnt out but had it reconditioned and now fine again..probably should have used flashlube but at £15 a time i dont see its that economical...might as well get another engine with the money you save by not having it...yes 18/19 mpg doesnt seem alot but if like me you can get gas at 52p a litre and last summer was 38p then even compared to diesel its far better. The equivalent to say paying £1.20 for diesel means you are getting about 43mpg on gas...show me a box van on diesel that can do 43 mpg? and when you get it at 38p it works out at nearly 60mpg!
