Broken Exhaust manifold bolts.

Postby therigsmith » Wed Nov 08, 2017 9:37 pm

My Engine is totally shagged now. I have a spare but I broke the bloody exhaust manifold bolts off on the block years ago.

Not had a look yet at the situation, it happened but I am going to have to get this out of storage tomorrow.

Any suggestions what to do with the snapped bolts.

Not an easy job!!!

How I would try to cure this problem.

Try drilling, starting with a small drill, be 100% sure you are in the center of the broken bolt.
Go slowly to bigger drills, ending up with the size you need before tapping the same tread.
Take it easy and avoid to break any of the drills...If you brake a drill, than you are in deep s....
The material of the drill is so much harder than of the bolt.
If this fails, go to the heli coil, remember drilling/tapping in the block, the material is harder than the bolt...
Again, do not break drills or taps...

Hope this is readable, I am not sure if I used all the correct words....
succes!!!

See if you can get some reverse drill bits? 99% of the time they bite and will unscrew whats left of the bolt

What is the best material drill bit to use?

As in what is less likely to snap.

Pic of the snapped bolts

Did they shear flush or is there some sticking out :?: (anything to grip on or weld a nut to)

As gotgcoalman asked, show us a picture (foto photo?) of the snapped bolt...
Why dit the bolt snap? Corroded outside the block? Corroded inside the block?

I've found that welding nuts to the snapped stud works really well. The heat of the welding tends to free the stud and just unwind it using the nut.

It also saves using up your supply of lesbians and special brew

I think I am in luck. I dont see anything snapped at the moment. The engine was removed very quickly 3 years ago as we moved house and had to scrap the body.

I think the broken bolts where in the exhaust flange :)

Its looking a bit rusty though.

God dammit I found them.

3 broken studs on the exhaust manifold on the engine. Sticking out aprox 10mm or less.

You can get to these studs from both sides though.

In a bit I will grab a photo

Try mole grips on them but make sure there good quality with good teeth to bite into the stud, a bit of heat will make the likelihood of success much improved. Failing that get a nut welded onto the stud as others have said.

If you have to drill them, be careful, as the bolts are somewhat harder than the block casting and it's easy to have the drill wander.
