Diesel injection pump solutions for Transit C-1090 2.5TD '98

From what I've read it's not uncommon for this model of transit to have problems with the diesel injection pump. The fixing price for the repair was over €1000 so we tried to repair it using what we considered as working parts from a pump bought on eBay. That didn't turn out cheaply either and failed. We're now looking into using the injection pumps from previous models of transit as I've read that can be an option. There is a Bosch (686?)Has anyone installed the older pumps? How was it?
