winter is coming we have already had frost , does anybody find it is not the battery or starter motor , cables ect , but the compression in the engine which causes starting problems in freezing weather ? .

Nope. A good DI will still fire up happily in climates that require inlet heaters.

Discounting faulty coldstart set-ups on pumps, it's always been at least one of the above that causes starting problems.

Compression needs to build up quickly to ignite the fuel.
Slow cranking = detination compression not being reached.
Causes bad battery/cables/lazy starter.
also
valve clearances and timing slightly out will cause bad starting.

Ford fitted thinner battery cables on later vans that fail after years of use. You dont notice the decline in performance of the starter motor caused by the voltage drop down the cables.

A volt meter connected over the length of the cable will detect the loss when you crank the engine, any more than 0.3 volt per cable will need replacing.

This video shows how cables are tested

F111ORY , thanks for info , interesting , but as i live at the top of a hill , always bump start the van untill the freezing weather as now come ,getting harder to start (get 3 goes )then have to tow it , also spraying petrol into the intake works , another g reg van which i have (mot failure) will start anytime in any weather ,can only assume it is the condition of the engine or ford changed the pitons / combustion chambers as they do not pull weight like they used to do in the past ? .
