Timing hole bolts broken

Postby therigsmith » Sat Nov 18, 2017 1:03 pm

just got the new engine in. Now got to remove the flywheel I just swapped to get the timing hole out.

Somewhere along the line timing hole bolts got broken. I cannot think of when I would have put anything in this to brake it. nore dose the flywheel have marks on the back of it. Can only assume its been hit in transit.

If i cannot get the bolts out to refit is there another way to time up the flywheel if the hole is missing.

Pictures please. The flywheel timing hole is just that, a hole. No bolts fitted. Do you mean the flywheel to crankshaft flange bolts?

is it the dowel/locating pin that's snapped?

Good thing it was spotted. I took it off the other engine and fitted it.

God knows how but the timing hole plate was snapped in 2 places near the bolts, it looks really strong. Its the oval flange bit with 2 bolt holes with Ford and some kind of ID code onit.

One of the bolts is tamper proof snap off type. it was kind of lose fitting to I lined it up with the old dirt marks and now hope for the best timing it. I fitted a normal bolt in the other hole with the tamper bolt.

Is it the flywheel (gear box end)
or the injector pump pully you're refering to?

Its the 13mm timing hole. the one above and slightly right of the starter motor.

The only way to refit it was to remove the flywheel.

I know exactly what he means. The hole for the flywheel pin is in a casting which bolts to the rear of the block.

Yes the cast bit. Looks like a flange from inside

Why is the bolt tamper proof.

Is that some kind of chassis number on it. or was it a calibrated position. I was worried it first it could be for clearance. I dont think my flywheel hits a normal bolt but I am having loads of trouble with the engine ;(

Its just a bog standard torx normally...

I don't think its a calibrated position but is just a bolt it on item

is it a shear bolt ? it is meant to be "calibrated" but you can normally see where the old one was fitted
