can i put either size tyres on a standard 14" steel wheel or are the tyres specific to wheels, sorry to ask such a basic question,

It depends on the width of the wheel not the diameter.
But to answer your question 195 or 185 will fit your wheels. Are they the steel or alloy ones?

It depends on which tyres your van was specced with in the first place.
Although you can always fit 195's in place of the 185's, the heavier vans which had 195's fitted from the factory, should stay as 195's

yes it's a swb 80 original tyres fitted were 185's, 14" steel rims, so would 195's be good ? cheers

Yes, the '80 was the lightest van so would have had 185's, but yes the slightly bigger, fatter, tyres will fit the rims and the van OK 8)

Just make sure that both wheels of the axle have the same size tyre fitted.

I'm running 205R14C 8 ply. No probs and they put the gearing up slightly, about 4" per rev compared to 185s.

The only time I've ever had an accurate speedo in a Transit was running 205s
