First, you should think over what you want to do with the van...
Staying overnight? Have a "light" meal? Have a cooked meal? Go away for the week-end or longer periods?
If you decide to go camping, where would you stay... camp-sites or would you like to stay overnight and be completely self supporting.
Once you made a solid decision, priority wise, how you want to use the van, start looking around to other peoples plans / layouts.
Try to learn as much as possible from other peoples mistakes... That's a lot cheaper than making your own.

Good luck

try some of the moterhome forums... wildcamping for example ... has a section on members conversions and often delves into the ins and outs of things like solar power , split charging of batteries , night heaters and all the systems

as to the difference tween dayvan and camper...basically its the presence of a bed in the camper.
