Started flickering on and off when driving home today...now on all the time...do you think it is sender faulty or could it be the oil pump if there is one? its a petrol mk3 pinto engine 1990

How far have you driven with the light on?
any more than a few seconds and the bottom end is toast.

SO

It's probably the sender/wiring.
can you borrow an oil pressure gauge?

The oil pump drive on these engines is a hexagonal shaft from the bottom of the distributor down into the oil pump and they do sometimes round off and you lose the drive. I think you can draw it out if you remove the distributor. But my first test would be to screw in a pressure gauge and see what is happening.

Most likely a faulty oil pressure switch.

I certainly would not drive, run the engine unless I was 100% sure there is oil pressure.
If there is no oil pressure, you are going to kill the engine.
I never like to contradict (hope this is the exact word) someone on the forum (everybody wants to help!)
But from my own experience (brake in the oil line) my engine was not toasted after a few seconds, not after a few minutes)...

All that is needed is to screw in a gauge and for less than £3 all will be revealed. A lot cheaper than a new engine!
