MK5 Smiley - No power to starter.

Postby Don-44 » Sun Dec 03, 2017 1:55 pm

Hi all,

After bragging that my 1997 MK5 smiley started first time every time it decided to stop supplying power to the starter motor!
At first it was every now and again, then it was more of a surprise when it did start. After running it, and without touching anything at all, it then would not start again.
So, turning the key lights up the dash but nothing after on the final position, no clicking of relays or anything.

I searched through this forum and so far have checked the following.
1. Swapped the keys for another red topped one.
2. Starter Motor turns over when 12v supplied direct
3. All fuses and wires in both the engine bay and under the steering wheel thoroughly checked with volts both sides of the fuses.
4. An earth put on the yellow Starter motor inhibitor relay behind the glove box, now activates the relay and starter turns but engine just turns over.
5. I suspected the PATS module but it starts very occasionally so can't be that????

Now run out of ideas!!

Ladies and Gentlemen ...any help would be appreciated

Cheers

Don

Ignition barrel?
If it'll turn over but not fire with a direct feed crack an injector to see if it's getting fuel to the injectors.

Pats cuts power to starter and to the solonoid on the pump.
Is the light blinking a code?

Thanks for idea,

Have checked it in the past but just checked it again this afternoon and all looks well. Getting voltage switching in and out as the key turns with 12v on the larger black lead as I turn it to the starting position.

Cheers anyways.

Only thing I can think is that it is the PATS board...anyone any ideas what i should be getting on each of the contacts??

Thanks

Hi,

Thank You, couldn't find the PATS light only the oil and battery light came on

... no flashing PATS light anywhere...

however I wanted to see what the after market immobiliser LED was going to do (I've not used it for about a year) ..

so After several rounds of button pressing and numorous alarms and warnings, the LED still didn't light but the van started!.

I then removed the earth on the inhibitor relay and ...Nothing no clicks, put the earth back on and it started again.

All very weird so still not 100% confident the fault is cured

Thanks for those replies, will still keep hunting

Immobiliser light will be up beside the interior mirror or on the dash but with you talking about having a red chip key I think the light will be in the headliner.
Then you said a aftermarket immobiliser that’s a hole different ball ache to fault find.

Looked all over for the PATS light...given up! Just got to put it all back together and hope it still starts. need to sort the immobiliser wiring out as whoever fitted it just " bunged" it in with all the wires taped into a bundle!....Thanks to all who helped.

Have asked on another thread as well but anyone know how to put a switched 12v to the DDS/Fuel pump as I've put a short on the yellow starter relay and it turns over but think the pump is now needing power (Had the van starting lovely every time until I put the dash back in)
