Copying keys

Postby Riggard » Fri Dec 29, 2017 6:49 pm

Hey All,

My 2nd post here after lurking for a while; brief introduction, im Richard, live in Holland and bought a MK5 westfalia (nugget) campervan, the idea is to do a trip to spain/portugal with it this summer. Already changed all oils, belts, valve adjustments etc. Currently busy cleaning up some rusty spots and welding in patch plates, but the weather isn't really helping.

One of the other things i wanted to do, is to get a spare key. I already have 3 keys with the 'red' transponder thingy in it. I ordered a fourth one with a 4d60 transponder. I read somewhere that you could copy the transponder by putting 1 key in the ignition, position II for like 5 seconds, do the same with the other key and then put in the new one so the transponder will be 'learned'.

So i tried that, but it didn't work.

Can anyone give me some hints as to what i'm doing wrong? Is it maybe not possible to copy the red transponders, only the blue ones?

Kind regards,
Rich

Up until around 1997, you needed the all red master key to program copies (not a black key with a red chip)
TransitRedKey002-1 (1).JPG

, after 1997, you need two originals with the red chips to make copies (or are the later ones blue :?: :? ) :)

Isn’t there a limit of 3 keys that can be programmed at the same time

Is that registration date, or built at the factory date :?:

Campers are often older than you think, due to being sold to the builder as chassis, and then being registered after kitting out, much later than the build date

But then if you had it from new, you would have had the red key if there was one :?

I'm not sure if there is a limit, but mine had at least four, and possibly even 5 keys, at one time

Build date is 12/1997, registration was in 98. It's been imported from germany to belgium, and i imported it to holland, so definetly not the first owner ;) However, the van is complete with the full service history and all that, also 3 spare keys, but i don't have the red one. It would kind of surprise me that the previous owners were so meticulous on tracking all maintenance etc, but lost the red key(?)

Some googling did tell me that the transponder for my transit is probably an older type than the one that's in the key now, so i ordered one that should match. Still curious to know whether others have been able to copy keys with the red transponder thingy?

If you need a new key because yours is worn you can take the transponder out of the old key and put in a new one and will not have to recode it as red key it was always advised to put it somewhere safe as cannot be replaced

Where is the Immobiliser l.e.d. On your van,on headlining near interior light,
Or dash by heater controls ?

I think you can have upto 16 keys coded to the PATS on mk5

In the headlining makes it PATS 1, so you need to have the all red key to make copies :(

I'm surprised that a Mk5 built that late has PATS 1 :?

Thanks! Guess it's not going to work then, because I do not have this key.

Kind of surprising to me as well, most of the other parts were all 'recent' (e.g. timing belt width, injectors etc.)

Yes, mine was the same, built in July 1997 and had PATS 1, but also had the (later?) 28mm timing belt :?

You'll need to get a locksmith to clone one of the other keys, or (more difficult) get one programmed from scratch with Ford IDS or FDS2000 kit
