Postby Stule » Thu Jan 04, 2018 7:21 pm

Is it possible to mount the Mk6 axle twin wheel to MK4 Transit and what is different. because in my country i cant find anywhere double wheel axle for mk4 or mk5 only for mk3. But i can find axles for mk6 very cheap, much cheaper than mk3 and in much better shape. Thanks guys

Has your van got a twin wheel axle fitted in it now or is it a single wheel if it is a single passenger it will need a lot of body work doing to fit any twin wheel axle as the chassis rails are nearer to the centre of the van to acomadate the inner wheel offset .
If you’re is all ready a twin wheel van measure up both axles to see if they are the same width and mounting are in the same place if you could cut them off and fabricate new mountings as for the propshaft overhear all I’d do is take prop to specialist have the end changed and length adjusted as needed

My transit is beavertail recovery so its not a van. I have single wheel back now. But i can buy mk3 doublewheel diff. Only problem is on mk3 the wheels are 14 and i allready have a 15 double wheels because 14 are small.

I don’t know if stud pattern is the same but the mk3 had cone type nuts and the mk6 is spigot type nuts also if you’re mk6 has abs it’s not going to work also

The guy is trying to find out if he can fit a mk6 axel to a mk4 so it isn’t going to matter about if the mk6 has abs or not.
The wheels are not going to fit because the mk3 is different to the mk4-5 and also the mk4-5 wheels aren’t going to fit the mk6 axel because the wheel studs are bigger on the mk4-5 (16mm) the mk6 is (14mm) not sure about the mk3 but the pcd isn’t the same on the mk3 but is the same on the mk6 but it is fitted with smaller studs  You can fit the mk6 axel using mk6 wheels but then you need 2 spare wheels. That’s before you even start with changing spring mounting points and handbrake cables, propshaft etc but maybe they aren’t all that different but I doubt they will fit without work.

What is your reason to change from single wheel to twin wheel?

Because my transit is a recovery truck and when towing a heavier cars just on two back tires they go preety down and woobles at turns and bumps like on water.

Have you read on this forum what AXXEZ did with the back axle on his "offroad MK3 camper" ...progress report...
On my ambulance conversion, 3200kg total weight, single wheels, the back axle is supported by some kind of air shock absorbers who give extra lift.

Maybe tyres with a higher load index could help, extra leaf on the suspension, heavier shock absorbers ...
You could PM AXXEZ he has a lot off experience on this subject! 8)
Good luck

Ceurieusneus, thanks for your reply, but i allready have tires with higher load and extra leaf but for me just isnt enough. My recovery truck weight unladen 2150kg and often i drive loads of 1500-1900kg and that is a little too much for my axle to handle.
