Plastic headlamps

Postby Lambulance » Mon Jan 15, 2018 4:57 pm

Hi all, unfortunately i have broken one of my headlamps, and so have bought a new one. It looks nice and shiny, but the other one is really dull. Any tips on polishing up the plastic on the old one?

I'm assuming you have a mk5.
Best option is to send the new plastic 1 back and buy a pair of glass lensed one's for a mk4.
Direct fit and never worry about them becoming opaque/dull.
OR
use a fine cutting compound on the old lens.
Autosol used to work for me.
Had to do it every year though :(
You can buy a kit to refurb the lens (includes the UV protection stuff)

You can get kits online fleabay etc, some folks use toothpaste or bicarb, I tried myself but they were quite bad and after half an hour with not much improvement I just bought £25 lights from fleabay.

G3 cutting compound is what you need & use an electric polishing mop.

Only use a mechanical polisher if you are experienced.
Too much pressure/heat will cause crazing in the plastic :(

Yes if you use a mop squirt a drop of water on the plastic or mop head now and then to keep it cool, you don't need the mop head spinning very fast anyway.
