How long can you leave a van without starting...Beat this!

Postby straydog » Fri Feb 02, 2018 11:28 pm

Hi Guys.
Just posting this here as a WTF!!!!
currently own a 2008 MK7 Jumbo.
But I also have a MK4 Transit 1993.
Well this old girl failed it's MOT miserably back in about 2005
Basically it's chassis rusted out (Long story:( )
Well it had been standing at the bottom of my garden since that time, so over 10 years.
It had been used for nothing else but storing gardening cr#p .
Last month SWMBO said time to get rid, so thought I'd chuck a battery on it to see if it would turn over.
Thinking I might be able to salvage some engine parts.

NOW HERE'S THE SHOCKER !!!!!!!!!! (Yea you know what's coming)
It hadn't even done a full revolution on the engine, and it started right up and run as sweet as a nut.
Even with the old fuel in it, even the clutch was free.
Ya could have knocked me over with a feather, even my father in law, who had been a motor mechanic all his working life couldn't believe it.

We chucked it in gear and drove it back up the garden as if it'd just been parked last week.
The only thing that showed it's long rest was the brakes, having no signs of wanting to work.
So now I'm wondering if I could make project out of it, certainly I ain't getting rid of it.

Now here's the irony, went out to move my Mk7. The F###er wouldn't start!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just thought it might make an interesting post.

Ah I was waiting with baited breath for you to say that the original battery started it  yes I know but still :P .

Yeah car manufacturers realized that making them less reliable and a bit well, sh*t means that they can sell more of them and make more money so you have the current situation

My custom is on 12000 miles now so I'm wondering if it is ready to scrap

Start the engine after 12 years of parking?
It is amazing!
We bought the son of a motor from a car that had been standing for three years and had to be disassembled-the crankshaft was not rotated, the pistons were blocked in cores by corrosion.

So they get onto the government who tighten up mot standards or stop us going into London village
Still we keep spending time and money on them until 2040 in which case we'll have hover cars that use the power of angry thoughts to propel them around

Na old battery well fracked, If it had started it I'd contact the Guinness book of records,
12000 miles you say, my old girl got over 15000 before it got parked up.
If it we not for the MOT, well chassis really I would probably still be driving it.
God knows how many miles it would have had by now then.
