New Wheel Bearing Squeeks on Cornering

Postby jimllshiftit » Mon Feb 05, 2018 9:39 pm

Firstly, Im panicking a bit because im supposed to be setting of on 3000 miles journey on Wednesday. Therefore this is not the time for "issues".

On Saturday I fitted a new front N/S wheel bearing on my 190 6 stud.

I put plenty of grease into the new bearings, I took a lot of care to work it in well. Today is the first time ive driven it since fitting. Ive probably done about 30miles since then but for the last 15 miles I notice a squeel coming from that corner when i go around right hand corners and roundabouts, also when going backwards. Its silent when going left or in a straight line.

I'm guessing its too tight but, what do you lot think? :?

how tight did you do it up?
tapered bearing doesn't need to be FT.
squeel could be the top mount of the shocker.
turning right and weight transfer.

Even if you over tightened I would suppose 30 miles is a record for a bearing to fail.

I don't think it's FT. I put a bit of preload into it, span it forward and back until it ran smooth without too much end float, then refitted the brake caliper and the wheel.

Just wondered if anyone had had a similar experience before...

There is a set amount of endfloat/play that should be set - 0.2mm (0.008") comes to mind(?). Tbough I just nip them hand tight and keep an eye on them as they settle in.

It's possible they are slightly loose and the noise is the brake pads chattering.

Hmmmm..... It was an ebay item but it was brand I've used before and never had any trouble.

Anyway, it matters not. I slackened if by a quarter turn and it started to squeel like a pig! Then I tightened it half a turn and now it seems perfect. I reckon the disc was rubbing on the pad when cornering...... As Mr Archer suggests. But now it is fine.

Cheers for the support chaps! :D
