I own a Mk 5 with petrol engine, it's a Westfalia Nugget camper. Due to expensive corrosion damage, I'm looking to sell it. The engine is still good, purrs like a kitten and starts without a hiccup even in moist and cold conditions. It has run 203.000km.
Minor issue: I'm in the Netherlands :-)

2.0 pinto is simple.
2.0 Zetec is modern and you will need to sort out a loom for injection and sparks
3.0 V6 Essex is old heavy and powerful
3.5 and up rover v8 should fit

If you go for a Pinto SOHC try to find an EFi Pinto SOHC from a Sierra and run it on a VV. The EFi is 9-1 compression ratio, mine pulled like a steam train. A 34 ICH kit will work if set up with correct chokes and jets etc either way be sure to fit the hot air collector or you'll end up with carb. icing.
Before you install it check the cam and oil spray bar is OK, the cam comes out the back of the head, head off once installed. Check the stem oil seals as well, there's a tool to do them without lifting the head.
You'll need the engine/ MT75 gearbox adaptor plate and the transit exhaust manifold(?).

2.9 V6 Cologne is another alternative, preferably with the MT75 as well as ECU attached to it.
