strange overheating situation

Postby SINNED53 » Sun Feb 18, 2018 1:25 pm

Hi, not been on here for some time as the vans been spot on but it now overheats when on a long steady climb but will stand ticking over in 30 plus temperatures (Spain) for ever without the gauge moving. I have an extra electric van which helps slightly but not much. I'm about to do timing belt and water pump also fitting a new radiator, is there an up rated water pump or radiator I could fit, also could there be another reason for the overheating under load. It's a 1999, 1996 build smiley face 2.5 td camper with 120k miles. It's got the annoying dreaded engine management light but I sort of live with it maybe a new timing belt will help.

I would check the thermostat first

First thing I did, checked out ok but fitted a new one anyway, flushed rad in situ and changed coolant, maybe I'll find the pumps faulty when in comes off, just wondering if there were up rated units available.

Motor overtemperature occurs when when the motor generates excessive heat due to improper tuning or the cooling system has a malfunction.
In the first case, there is usually a large fuel consumption, in the second case there is a malfunction of the thermostat or dirt in the radiator.
You have already replaced the thermostat, but the motor overheats?
The main valve of the thermostat in boiling water should open by 8 millimeters, no less!
You can replace the radiator, use a radiator from 100 strong turbo engine or from a gasoline. They better remove heat because of the large size.
And both are in the place of the regular..
Before changing the radiator, you need to monitor fuel consumption. If it is more than 12 l / 100 km, then first you need to eliminate the cause of high fuel consumption.

The thermal coupling of the fan may still be faulty.
And just a ridiculous reason: the fan is installed from the gasoline engine.

The turbo diesel had a different, heavier duty viscous fan hub and blades.
Should be in a shroud on radiator too,N/A doesn't have one.
(Mk5 petrols would be electric fan)
The water pump pulley was also smaller,so spins faster.
Should have a oil cooler too, sandwiched between filter and the block.
Never had to check a radiator but I assume they are different.

All good points, I'll look into renewing the viscous thingy whilst doing the belt, can,t say I've ever noticed an oil cooler though I'll check when it comes out of storage, don't suppose a smaller pulley from some other engine will fit making it spin even faster or could that destroy the beariing.

I have 2.5 diesel and Mk5 2.5 turbodiesel 100 horsepower.
The radiator of a turbodiesel is completely suitable for a diesel engine.
Thermo coupling and turbo-diesel fan separately and together fit diesel.
Gasoline Mk4 ОHC has a similarly similar clutch and fan, but rotate in the other direction.
The coupling of the gasoline engine can not be mounted on the diesel.
The fan of the gasoline engine can be installed on the diesel engine.
Diesel with a gasoline fan will overheat.
