Ford Transit Duetto -1994

Postby HildaB » Sat Feb 24, 2018 2:54 pm

We were wondering if someone could help us with a problem we are having with the fuel uplift pump on our Duetto. We have had this replaced 4 times and are still getting a problem. We have been told that this could be a back pressure problem.
Can anyone help?

Is this a diesel model?
Hmm, now I feel a bit daft. Don't think they did a petrol duetto.
An expert will be along shortly but if the lift pump has been replaced I would suggest that there is either sediment in the tank blocking the pump or somewhere along the fuel line.
Are you sure it's not a blockage in your main fuel filter?

As you say it is diesel. My partner says that he does not think it is the fuel filter as this was replaced last year. That's all I can tell you, do not know much about vehicles.

The diesels have a lift pump driven by the camshaft, its bolted to the block just above the exhaust front pipe,on passenger side of the engine.

Is this the pump you mean, and what fault caused it to be replaced ?

Spoke to my partner and he says "yes it is that pump". It was leaking and had it replaced, then 6-8 weeks later is was leaking again, so another was fitted. Hope this makes sense.

replaced with new or "pre loved"?
4 replacements seems excessive.
Does it have the original quick fit connectors? (fords worst idea ever)
was it leaking diesel or oil? or both.

Is the little heat shield still bolted on to protect the pump from the heat of the exhaust?
In saying that most are broken of and don’t seem to suffer pump failure anything like as often as your are suffering.
I assume you are fitting the same brand pump or have you tried different brands just to make sure they aren’t made in China junk (probably all are now a days but worth trying buying from different supplier just to see.

Installing a serviceable original booster pump eliminates your problem.
Such a pump is expensive, but it's worth it.

In reply to gotgcoalman, it was 4 new replacements and it was leaking both oil and diesel.

Unusual for a new pump to leak diesel although if the "O" ring seal wasn't replaced it would leak/weep oil.

can you get a pic of where it's leaking?

Bad rolling of the housing with the diaphragm gives a fuel leakage, a poor stem packing oil leakage.
If the first, all the same a rarity, then oil leakage through the omentum happens often.
I have a pump assembled from two different parts.
The mechanical part is a modernized Chinese case with diaphragm, where I installed another oil seal of the stem, hydraulic-from the very old Soviet GAZ 69 car, copies of the American jeep.

I sometimes do stupid things like this pump.
It is better to buy from a good manufacturer.

Hi,HildaB
Fuel can flow through the faulty quick-detachable connector on the booster pump.

Replace "O" ring and smear some grease to provide a seal if you have the "quick fit connectors"
Bloody Ford and their silly ideas.

Thanks everyone for getting back. At the moment the van is in the garage for various other things and the mechanic is going to look thoroughly at where it is leaking. Fingers crossed it will be sorted. Thanks again all. :|
