camshaft locking

Postby dick » Fri Mar 09, 2018 3:38 pm

hi, i need to change the camshaft oïl seal on my 98 2.5 di, got all the pullies locked in place, started to undo the cam pully bolt and it turned about 1/4 of a turn and has locked up, worried that if i try to force it the woodruff key will break and turn the cam,, is there another way to lock the camshaft and take the strain off the it, cheers

If you fit a good solid steel pin in the camshaft locking hole then it shouldn't move, did the bolt actually turn, or the camshaft pulley?

if the bolt turned and then went tight you could try tightening it up again and then try undoing again.

If the camshaft pulley turned then its probably locking up when the valves hit the pistons.

yes the bolt turned about 1/4 turn, the pully is well locked up too, just didn't want to break anything, cheers

I had one that needed a 2ft tube over the breaker bar to get enough leverage to turn it and it groaned all the way out only getting an 1/8th of a turn at a time apart from the last few threads, I think it had been slightly cross threaded

tough one then, i'm worried that too much pressure on the bolt would turn the crankshaft, or is that impossible,

Pin it and have at it with the breaker bar.(windy gun would be better)
Is the belt still on?
If it is then pin all holes/in gear with handbrake on and it shouldn't move at all.
If the belts off,pin it and hold the pin to stop the "play"or use a prybar/large screwdriver through the pulley to lock it off against the engine block.

Yep as per gotgcoalman, and whilst you have it all pinned in the correct position mark the crankshaft with paint, tipex, or whatever and then you can see if it moves and its easier to line up the pin hole in the crank in future by looking at your mark.

dick, before unscrewing the camshaft bolt, did you put the crankshaft, camshaft and the injection pump pulley on the latches?
And it was necessary.
In this case, even after turning the camshaft, you can safely change its oïl seal, install a pulley on the camshaft, turn the camshaft to coincidence of the holes in it and the plate and install the retainer.
After that, you can install the timing belt, pull out the three latches, crank the crankshaft twice by the bolt and check the coincidence of the three holes and the three locks.
If necessary, reinstall the timing belt.
I hope that the crankshaft stands on the retainer?
Unscrew the camshaft bolt, change the oil seal, put the pulley, rotate the camshaft before installing it on the lock.
All at you it will turn out!
If the valves have rested against the pistons, the unscrewing of the camshaft bolt will not check the crankshaft and should not damage the valves or booms.
