I forgot to mention when pump is pegged up slacken the bolts on pump drive so the belt pulley can turn when adjusting the belt and don’t forget to tighten up before removing locking pins

I played with the pulleys without taking off the rocker cover. Now everything is lined up and the engine rotates freely by hand, but it wont start when I crank it with the starter.

I was indeed referring to the oil pump drive gear which is not keyed. There is always the chance the front nut has previously been loosened and not torqued up. Better safe than sorry.

Did you slacken the bolts on pump drive so it can turn when fitting and tensioning the belt if not pump timeing can be out but it may not be out enough for it not to start you may have another problem check wireing to pump also slacken injector pipes and see if fuel is coming out when turning over on starter

It can take a lot of cranking to get fuel through to the injectors if the pump is empty, there should be bleed nipple on the left hand side of the pump looking from the front, crack that open first and when a you get a steady flow of fuel with no air close it again, then crack open the injector nuts until you get regular squirts of fuel from them,

If the stop solenoid is faulty you can remove it and take out the spring and rubber plunger and refit the bare solenoid to the pump, but you will have to stall the engine to stop it once started until the stop solenoid is fixed.

The situation is simple and not dangerous.
When Nonsense "played"with pulleys and crankshafts, he turned the crankshaft 180 degrees and set the clamp (stopper, rod) in the recess in the flywheel. The crankshaft should be turned 180 degrees and set the clamp in the through hole in the flywheel.
To properly do the job, you need to remove the timing belt and continue the "game" with the camshaft pulley and crankshaft.
You can remove the shaft of rockers and quietly install the crankshaft and camshaft in the right position.
This was mentioned here dumper.
The pump does not need to be turned, it remains with the lock.
With the correct installation of the crankshaft and camshaft, the crankshaft rotates unevenly: sometimes easily, sometimes hard.

Your right you don’t turn the pump you just let the tooth wheel turn as the adjuster is set to take any slack between pump and camshaft on the belt
