panel treatments

Postby enjoythistripp » Wed Mar 21, 2018 2:13 pm

ok so they must be thousands of posts regarding rust prevention and cure. Im treating my old Mk5 chassis cab/luton to a complete rebuild. That's inner and outer wings, arches and sills/step etc. I want to give them a few coats of long lasting protection before they are applied and sprayed. Im planning on hand painting or rattle cans. What would you recommend?
You can take a man out of a transit but you cant take the transit out of the man

Have used this on my Navarra chassis - so far so good.....https://www.arc-rite.co.uk/corroless-s- ... ize-2027-p
Always think it better to use a paint brush than rattle cans - goes on much thicker.

The front wings on a mk3/4/5 aren't structural so don't need to be welded on.......(it's the welded edges on the lower part where the rust starts).....so just bolt/screw/rivet them on......this allows you to coat all the mating surfaces before you fit them......(which doesn't get burned off like it does when they are welded on

Use a decent quality etch primer on any bare metal......then paint any 'behind the scenes' and mating surface
areas with a brush (as said above...."you get a thicker coat")
When you do the final fit use a bit of PU adhesive on the mating surfaces to prevent water from being 'sucked' into the joint

I used brantho korrux 3in1 for the invisible parts, awesome paint, very tough and works great against corrosion.

Interesting to hear the wings aren't structural so don't need welding - is this true for the arches as well?

Pm Paul 2012 he seems up to speed on new mot rules I never had a problem with my mk6 escort when I bolted the front wings on it but time change you could aways have a word with your local tester who tears your van
