Mk5 ignition barrel removal problem!

Postby emmetyak » Wed Apr 11, 2018 11:12 am

Hi all,
I need to remove the ignition barrel from my Smiley as I've lost the only key and I need to post the barrel and transponder to get a new one made.
Problem is that my Haynes manual says that you need to turn the key to 'I', which obviously I can't do.
Anyone know if it's possible to remove the barrel without the key?
Thanks in advance!

Again?? viewtopic.php?f=4&t=184328&p=1579188#p1579188

Assuming all the locks are on the same key, you can take out any of the locks to send off and rear or sliding door locks are much easier to remove.

Haha, no, still ongoing! I ordered a secondhand steering column and key from the UK (I live abroad in the middle of nowhere and can't get an auto locksmith to come). Anyway column came, but it was pre 1995, no immobiliser!

So yeah, still racking my brains about what to do!

Forgot to say, at some point all the locks were changed except the ignition. What can go wrong will go wrong

Only difference on a non immobiliser column is that the transponder isn't on it... so just put your one on.

Yeah...but I don't have a chipped key to match it.

Reckon I can take the transponder to the UK and get someone to cut the non-chipped key as a chipped key? Or get them to give me a blank, non-cut key that's matched with the transponder, then gaffer tape that to the transponder?

If you don't want or need the immobiliser, remove the RIM module from the back of the pump, (unless it's a turbo engine)

You only need the key to turn the steering lock then :)
