ARB bushes, can I replace them in situ?

Postby eresseraca » Tue Apr 17, 2018 8:57 am

So I need to fit new Anti roll bar bushes. Crawled under the van yesterday to have a look, seems fairly straight forward. But since I haven't done it before, just to check, can I loosen the clips that holds them in place, pull them out and refit with new bushings without loosening the bar itself and without jacking up the front end up. That is, is there any tension on the anti roll bar when car is steady on the ground?

Just to clarify not talking about drop links or anything, just these (pic stolen from a Saab blog or something).

Yep.
Do 1 at a time and the rollbar won't move very far.
Think I had to use a lever to get the bolts started when refitting.

Thanks gotcoalman!

A bugger though, those that I ordered are too small... pretty sure the diameter of my rollbar is larger than the hole in the bushing.

Ordered these:https://www.ebay.com/itm/130849423800

The outer measurements seem correct but the hole too small... :? But gotta go double check tomorrow with a vernier caliper.

Maybe I'll just take a 22mm drillbit to them then ;)

These seem to have some blue colored plastic inner ring that the ford original ones doesn't have... hmmm. I don't wanna wait nor pay for another set with shipping costs ;)

The rollbar will be "a bit crusty" giving the impression the bushes are too small.
think I took 1 off and vernierd the nice clean bit underneath to get the right size .

Sounds like a good idea to confirm it's not just fooling the eyes.

I'm sure there's actually 3 different sizes......I know the 190 has a thicker ARB than the 80 but can't remember the sizes......maybe the 3rd size is for mk3 swb vans :?: :?: :?:

From what I've found there's 18, 20 and 22/23mm (not sure about the last size)

I couldnt get the t40 bolts to cooperate yet but they're drenched with wd40 at the moment.

If the external size is the same for all three sizes I will drill mine out to 20mm. The ones I ordered were 18mm and the rollbar measures 21mm on the crusty parts, so mine's 20 for sure.

Any info on whether they all the same outer dimension?

Be careful drilling the you could end up with more play in them then the old ones

You're right about that!

On the ones that I order there's a 2mm thick layer of hard plastic/poly closest to the hole, if the old ones that are mounted now don't have this layer (I'll check once I get those T40 bolts to cooperate), then I'll drill the new ones fastened in a pillar drill with a 19mm drill, just to shave a bit of that plastic off... that should be enough to get them mounted properly and still not introduce a hole too big.

I got the torx bolt to loosen up after 2 days with wd40. The bushes fitted on the van did have the same blue colored inner plastics/poly ring as well. Tried to drill the 18mm holes to 20mm but still didn't fit well, so I ended up throwing them away and ordering new correct ones with a 20mm diamter hole instead. They aren't that expensive after all
