Removing carrier bearings.

Postby twin wheel camper » Tue Apr 24, 2018 9:46 am

What’s best to remove the carrier bearing from a smiley mk5 30mm driveshaft?
I’ve tried everything even heat but it won’t budge, this is in 2 different driveshafts (both spares) but need to suss this removal process before it needs replaced on my work transit. It’s starting to growl a little so will need looked at pretty soon ,
How do you guys remove them? both mine have fell to pieces with only the rubber and bearing left.
Is there a reasonable priced puller I can buy that will work?
Thanks for any info on this.

I just use a good cold chisel and a club hammer, a few whacks one side then turn 180 degrees and another few sharp whacks the other side has always got them moving for me, then just equal whack around the bearing until its off. :D

Would Ebay item number https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142710808421 be any good do you think? I’m not much good at links  but put into Ebay should show what I’m looking at.

Not to expensive so might just buy it and see if it will remove the bearings, if not will be handy I’m sure for other jobs over next number of years besides I like tools so any excuse to buy more suits me

Bought this and it worked first class :D in saying that it still took a little heat to get it shifted must have been there from new  ,it was genuine Ford carrier bearings on both my spare drive shafts, I just put as much pressure on as felt right then put my little heat gun to the bearing and it then popped off with a bang after about 45 seconds :D
I’ve now got to replace both my carrier bearing on my work van so hopefully they aren’t welded on

I often smash the outer off and grind the inner until its almost through then give it some welly with a chisel/hammer

When people say Ive hit it as many times and it wont budge, I say they are a few whacks away, remove with violence, get mad, it will come off.

Well with heavy hammering there’s also the risk of damaging the shaft so this is money well spent.
My work van wasn’t as tight as the spare shafts but still tricky to remove, the first one came off no problem but the second one went to pieces so I was left with the little center collar still on the shaft but this puller just easily removed it in 30 seconds :D
