Mk3 Steering Clunk

Postby Matt83 » Tue Apr 24, 2018 1:47 pm

Hello,

My girlfriend drives an old mk3 Transit (with a mk5 banana engine, according to the diagnosis of the kind members of this forum).

I've recently noticed it's developed a steering clunk. It happens when you wind the steering quite a way over to the right (eg when trying to get out of a tight parking spot). Once you find the spot, you can turn the wheel back and forth and it will clunk at that exact spot in both directions.

Head under the bonnet, and it sounds and feels to me like it is coming from the steering box itself, but I could easily be wrong.

Does anyone have any tips as to what it's most likely to be? And is the steering box serviceable if it is that?

Also, is the steering box from other transits (eg: mk4/mk5) compatible if we do need a replacement?

Ta! :D

On the MK3 the steering rack is installed.
It can be mechanical, maybe with a hydraulic booster.
Any version is compatible with MK4 and MK5.
The difference is only in the steering tips.
