Limp Mode occasionally

Postby matthias » Thu May 03, 2018 3:04 pm

Hi,
have a strange problem with my 97 2,5 TD. 85 PS
Occasionally the engine goes into Limp Mode.
Then switch off the engine and after restart, everything is ok for a while.
The engine pulls very strong and has good power normally, but not so in Limp Mode, when it feels very much like a problem with the Turbo.

I have had the car at a tester and that shows some 17 problems with sensors/signals.

A fwe weeks ago someone disconnected the big cable plug at the rear of the EPIC-pump, but did not put it togegther properly again.
Because I saw that I pit it together correctly and the engine did run correctly.
Could that have something to do with the problems?

I have another 97 2,5 TD available for spares, just in case.

Thank you!

Hi,
changed the following from the spare engine:

1: "Manifoild absolute pressure sensor"
2: "EGR Vacuum flow controller"

In hoping to get the problem solved.

First it seemed to be succesfull, but after about 50 km it started again, engine light on (and stays on now).

Now I`m thinking to swap the complete ECU-system, ECU, all the wiring and all sensors.

Is that possible and will it give no problems with the immobiliser system?

Thank you!

Does the engine "run-on" for a few seconds when you switch off the key :?:

When was the timing belt last changed :?:
1994 Mk4 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (R.I.P.)
1997 Mk5 SWB 115 Minibus 70ps Di (Gone, but not forgotten!)
2004 Mk6 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.0 TDDi - Vantunered (Also gone)
2008 Mk7 SWB T280 Medium Roof 85PS 2.2 TDCi - Also Vantunered

No, it doesn`t.

The cam belt change I have done a few month ago to very exacting standard, everything fine.

The engine runs very well anyway, very good fuel economy and quite strong, 380000 km

Thanks!

Hi,

still struggling with my "engine light on" problem....
Car still runs fine, but goes into limp-Mode after a while or very often.

Tester name a few (17!) problems:
6 Electrican connection problems
1 "short" of the throttle position sensor
1 No "Rev-Signal" from the EPIC

I have already changed.
1: "Manifoild absolute pressure sensor"
2: "EGR Vacuum flow controller"
3: "Throttle position sensor"

Nothing changed!

I`m now thinking of replacing the engine electrics complete in one turn, because all my efforts so far were not successfull.
I`ve everything available of a same car of the same year (1997), which ran fine.

My question is:
Are there any problems when I change the complete engine loom with ECU?
Will it also be necessary to change the EPIC?
And will it give trouble with the immobiliser (Is it possible to "prgrame" that out?)?

Thanks again!

Hi,matthias.
Of the 17 errors, about half can not affect the operation of the EPIC system.
You must write down the error numbers and decipher their meaning.
Errors in the EGR on the operation of the system do not affect.
Not a constant, "floating" error creates the most problems when diagnosing.
You need to erase all the errors, start the engine and make a test ride before the error occurs again.
And again read the errors.
Study the composition, arrangement and interaction of parts of the EPIC system.
Read the mistakes and do their decoding.

For $ 1000 in Kiev, you could buy not an original but working program to diagnose the EPIC system, install it on a laptop and work.
I do not have a Transit with the EPIC system, so I was not very interested in this topic, but I'm interested in general procedures for the diagnostics of the control systems of modern cars.

Hi,

thank you for the EPIC Workbook (which I`ve already had, but forgotten.....)

Now the codes are clear and most of the 17 have to do with the pump:

110 Air Temperature S. 23
110
112 Air temperature low S. 23
113 Air Temperature High S. 23
113
116 Coolant Temperature S. 22
122 Throttle Valve Low S. 25
185 Pump Temperature S. 16
401 EGR Sensor Low S. 24
1171 Rotor Position S. 9
1174 Pump Cam Position S. 14
1185 Pump Temperature high S. 16
1189 Pump Speed Lost S.18
1190 Calibration Resistor S 17
1402 EGR Valve Position Sensor S. 24
1644 Pump Speed Sensor S. 18

So I assume that it has to do with the disconnection of the multi plug of the EPIC pump, which I mentioned above (not properly reconnected which gave electrical trouble.

Can somebody give me a hint what`s to do now best?

Will it be ok when I only swop the complete engine loom from the spare car or will I need to swop also the ECU and possibly also the EPIC?
Or only the EPIC, depending were the problem is and if possibly the pump has been damaged?

Thanks again!

Have you removed the multiplug and checked and cleaned all the connections?

Yes, I checked these, but found nothing, but as I now know the exact faults, it`s possibly worth to look closer again.

Thank you!
