starter motor circuit 97 transit 2.5Di smiley

Postby 97transit2.5D » Mon May 21, 2018 9:13 am

Hi MK5 gurus

recently replaced a starter motor with a new one from BOSCH. why?Had the problem of the starter clicking..ie faulty starter solenoid.

all connections are tight, earth cleaned and tight.

starting sequence is >>turn key until heater light goes>> out then turn key completely>>start,

now with new starter still get occasional click. no start. dont think it is starter solenoid

question: is there some some of relay inbetween the starter and the ignition circuit..

battery is fully charged, out temp is 10 deg positive. fresh diesel

thanks Rick ,New Zealand

Check the crimped connections on the starter cable and engine earth. I've cables come loose in the crimps on the Transit and the hearse, and a tug or twist on a cable has temporarily solved the problem.

Depends on the age, early smileys have a relay on the drivers side (rhd) inner wing for the starter and its common for the terminals etc to corrode and fail

I put in a decent extra relay.... battery - fuse - relay - solenoid
Relay is activated by the (old) solenoid cable.
No more clicks. :D

Make sure everything is safe
Do not forget to use a FUSE!

If you turn the key,but the solenoid does not on,a problem in the starter circuit-ignition switch, relay, wire.
If the solenoid turns on while turning the key, but the starter motor does not rotate, then the problem may be in the power wires from the battery to the starter or from the battery to the engine block.

looking for a relay..this is a 1996..build...if i send a photo..is it on the right...new zealand is RHD..below right of the steering wheel is a fuse box...is it in there..or is it in the engine bay...????..its doing it more often...two turns of key nothing just click..brand new bosch starter remember..then third turn starts..those cables to starter end up in a junction close to battery..how do you troubleshoot this???Rick

If fitted its usually under the bonnet on the inner wing, follow the main lead from the battery positive terminal to the starter.

Make sure all connections are clean and tight.
Also try clamping a jump lead from the battery positive terminal direct to starter to bypass the main lead and see if it fixes it, if not then use another smaller wire from battery positive to the small terminal on the starter solenoid.

I'm a rough mechanic and check the starter by simply closing the receiving power bolt on the solenoid with the solenoid's control contact.
If the starter is working normally with such an inclusion, the problem is in the control wiring.
If a bad problem exists in the starter itself, the battery or the power wiring of the starter.

Hi

I looked in my Haynes manual..page WD18-19 book 3019 (thanks John Haynes!! RIP)

shows a starter relay...will hunt for it after the come back from football....could be inside engine bay...

Chuggy..you mentioned..If fitted its usually under the bonnet on the inner wings..whats a inner wing??

thanks Rick

Just follow the leads from the starter and you will find it, if its got one fitted.

I think i am looking for a cube type relay...they feature in my drivers cabin fuse box...might even try to remove a few there...but

this puppy should be in the engine bay close to the battery and prob near the main engine fuse box...as diag shows relay might be protected by a beefy 60A fuse..that is IF IT WAS ADDED...but why have a cct diag
if it does not exist and i doubt that the starter solenoid would come straight off an battery via a fuse.

also included what an OLD type of relay might look like in a mk3 or mk4
