No heated of splitter box or two speed axle for transits I assume yours is 5 speed box but on early mk3 some had overdrive gearboxes that worked on 3 & 4 gears their is a post on hear somewhere of a van with two overdrive units fitted so you may be able to fit one between gearbox and axle or just fit overdrive box instead of 5 speed

You can search and you will find a box of speeds with a demultiplier-with a downshift.

If you have an MT 75 5 speed box with an N/A Di motor I would venture to advise fitting a turbo. This will provide sufficient torque to pull 4th gear up the side of a house, figuratively speaking.
If you already have a turbo it needs fettling.
I have (as have many here) a bosch pumped turbo engine, the torque at 2000-2500 revs is ....interesting. I never need to go over 3000 rpm.

It is a 2.5 turbo, but it is a camper, and quite heavy. And I agree , it pull fine in 4..
It is a old car, so I will probably leave it as it is.
