Dual Battery trays

Postby HairyFool » Thu May 31, 2018 9:08 pm

I have a 1998 built 2.5TDI LWB motorhome.

Fitting new batteries as the old ones are dated 2009, sluggish to start and Euro Car Parts had a good offer (50%) so would be unlikely to afford them if not done now.

The strap holding the N/S fell off (a good start) and lifted it out. Not much of the tray left but glad I did it now, some corrosion on the wing but appears to be solid. A good brush down and repaint will do it.

Took out the O/S. Better but only marginally so now need to find two new trays A.S.A.P for the next trip.

Q1 The N/S rust has been in part due to the foam jacket over the wing trapping moisture. Why is it there as there is none on the O/S? Remove it?

Q2 The O/S tray has water sitting in it and no immediately obvious indication as to where from. Is there a known place for water to get in at either end of the bonnet?

Q3 http://magnumclassictransitpanels.co.uk/transit-mk5-1994-99.html?p=4&transit_model=66 list 3 trays. 1 has no bracketry so not right but the other two look exactly the same by the photograph Petrol and Diesel. Because the O/S sits in line with the wheel the side bracket should be on the long edge. Anybody used these and happy with them? I assume the description is right just the wrong Photo. Any other recommended source?

Water gets in where the plastic scuttle cover screws down. Look below the wipers, there are plastic screws above the batteries, if you are lucky they might still have trim caps on. These go into plastic captive nuts which are not weather sealed. Water drips through onto the batteries, off the back of the battery tray(s), into the soundproofing, and rots through where the bulkhead is welded to the wheel arch.

Petrol battery tray goes on nearside for the second battery in a diesel, there's also a tray that doesn't have the drop down support so can be fitted wherever.
