99 mk 5 95 amp alternator problem

Postby dick » Thu Jun 07, 2018 9:10 pm

hello all, the charge light on the dash doesn't come on at all, although the alternator does not charge , i've swapped it out for a spare i have but still nothing, i've tested the bulb and its good, i have 12v on the ribbon to the bulb and have 11v the the other side of the bulb, but i guess this should be earthed ?? to light the bulb, on the alternator what do the two wires on the push connector do, cheers

Mine packed in yesterday.
No light on the dash to indicate low charge.
Is yours like this one with the 2 wire plug ?

Volt meter in cab showing battery voltage and dropping as brakes and indicators were used to get home.
At 1 point it started charging 13.8v shown on the volt meter. This was short lived :(
got home and battery showed 12.1v.

Alternator dropped off at auto electric place for diagnostics/repair.

replacement is between £100-£140 new :( :(

I'll find out tomorrow if it's beyond economic repair

Can't remember off hand.
but
regulator/rectifier/diode in the alternator controls the charge/low charge light.
If that goes then the bulb won't light up.
Could also be fuse/wiring :(

Could be the small wire from the battery to the alternater that supplies power to excite it so it works. Had the same problem with a Hino truck
