1997 engine question

Postby Stevebrookman » Fri Jun 15, 2018 6:22 pm

Afternoon all,

Going to look at a1997 Smiley motor home. It's done 33000 miles. Anything that stands out mechanically with these? I have read that they are quite reliable. Bodywise I know what to look for - but have never had a diesel before.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Steve

If you know the usual rust places then mechanically it's just service history on such a low milage motor.
Timing belt should have been changed on age rather than milage.

Take a look for rust at usual places wings, bottoms and sills. And also take a look which pump it have if its a turbo engine and pull strenght.

If it's a turbo, the EPIC injection pump is the major weak point.

Thanks-having a look at the weekend. It's a turbo so likely to be the EPIC pump. Are these very troublesome?

Yes they are, best solution is to put Bosch pump in from the NA engine and no more problems, also you can then ditch the ecu and all electronics sensors etc. Result is much more safer van with no more problems. You cant do all of this if its Auto Transmission.
