New Gearbox, No Speedo and Which Timing Belt Tensioner

Postby jimllshiftit » Wed Jun 27, 2018 11:07 am

Hello all,

Not long finished installing my replacement engine and box but now I have a few teething troubles to overcome.

The first is that my speedo isnt working. Im guessing this is because the old gearbox had some wiring coming out of it near the propshaft end of the 'box and the replacement Mt75 did not. How do I get that working again?

Also, like a giant tit, i threw the old spring for the horizontal type timing belt tensioner away. For now I have fitted the other sprung cam cylindrical tensioner. Are they a straight swap of should I have modified anything first? Im not driving the van at the moment until I know that tensioner is safe.

Sounds like your van has the electrical speedo and the box you have fitted is the older type that is driven by a cable unless you old box was worn out you may have been better fitting your old box i am not sure if you can swop to the old style dash easily as for adjuster the last one I did came with the the newer type adjuster and was a direct replacement of the oil type you described if you tension up the belt as described in the instructions with the new kit it should be ok

Use the search function, there are instructions for swapping the electronic sender for a cable drive and vice versa, if you still have the bits.

Electronic to cable? Call me old fashioned but I like the sound of the cable drive better..... Still got the old electronic gearbox box, which was worn but i havent got the cable drive or the speedo. Hopefully ill find the bits somewhere.

Still need to look at this timing belt a bit more closely then..... Its seems too tight as there is a faint howl, almost sounds like a supercharger when i lift my foot of the throttle. Ive checked the tensioner as per instructions and that seems fine. Ive run the engine without the serpentine and the PS belts and the howl/whine noise is still there, never heard that on and of my previous smileys....... What else could it be?

Have you fitted a supercharger?
If not
regardless of the instructions the belt is too tight.
2 options

Live with it and replace the belt sooner than recomended.
or
re tension the belt.

You can replace the cable speedometer drive with an electric speedometer if they have plastic gears with the same number of teeth. Most likely, such gears have the same color.

Are three different timing belts:
- 1984 - 1992 teeth 2,5 mm high, belt width 25,4 mm nr 6138677 (844F-6K288-AB)
- 1992 - 06/1997 teeth are higher 3,5 mm, the same width 25,4 mm nr 1135355 (1C1Q-6K288-BA)
- 06/1997 - 2000 belt is wider 28,0 mm nr 1135354 (1C1Q-6K288-AA).
From 06/1996 for wider belt is mounted pulley with wider teeth. So - check have you correct belt on correct wheels. :?:

I disassembled the speed box into scrap metal and specifically removed the electric speedometer drive.
And the cable drive did not remove, but I think it's easier to change the design of the speedometer drive than the design of the gearbox.

Electric speedometer sensor.
I think when I shot it, it had a green plastic gear.
