Mk3 petrol refuelling problem

Postby jonb1985 » Sun Jul 15, 2018 11:25 pm

Hi all, I have a motorhome based on a 2.0 petrol transit mk3 smiley (1990 model year).
When I attempt to put petrol in the tank I have to do so very slowly, else petrol starts flowing out of the filler neck. Bizarrely, I recently took it for 2 weeks in France and the problem completely disappeared for the entire trip, but came back as soon as I tried to fill up in the UK.

The nozzle goes into the neck fully, so I'm guessing perhaps a blocked breather... Does that sound right? If so anybody know where it's located/what it looks like and how I would clear it out?

Thanks!

In the neck of the fuel tank there is a petal valve, which opens with a stream of fuel.
If the fuel is supplied with a strong jet, the valve does not fail and the fuel pours out of the filling hole.
Perhaps in France, a different design of fuel columns than in the UK.
At me in Ukraine it is a constant problem-spilling of fuel from a refueling hole

for me certain pumps are.........
30p worth click off 30p worth and off unless you fill slowly.

Other pumps/garages fill fine full speed.

I've checked for blockages and found nothing to cause the problem :(

Same for me. There is one pump in the Netherlands that showered me in diesel twice :x . Needless to say I will not use that one any more (unless I forget). Nowhere else I had similar problems. So it seems to be more pump related than car related.

It seems to do it for me in almost all petrol stations in the UK, I have to fill up at maybe 10-20% of the 'normal' rate to avoid spilling fuel.

So do you think that's just the norm with this van (ie perhaps the design of petrol nozzles has evolved and fuel pump flow rates have increased since 1991), so nothing I can do to fix it?

Thanks for the responses guys

You sure theres not the remains of an old fuel cap in the filler neck ?

Same issue with my van which is a Mk5. I prefer to fill it myself at stations as refuelling time can be an embarrassment! I find the only way is to hold the nozzle just past the neck and fill at a constant low pressure otherwise you get 'blow back'.

My mk5 can be filled at full pelt no matter what pump I try so there has to a issue with the tank somewhere, I don’t no what way the tank breathers in these transits but I would be looking to check it’s not blocked.
I had a Ford Granada 2.9i Ghia 4x4 that was a nightmare to fill but after trying everything the tank was removed and opened up to find it was full of what I can only describe as like aluminium cut into thin strips, the tank was stuffed full with it  .
The car was a n Ireland fully armoured patrol car and this must be some sort of safety device to stop the tank blowing up in a bomb or if penetrated with a bullet
After changing the tank it filled as normal.

Yes I am sure!
I took off the tank and studied the design of the neck.
I was curious to know what the fuel is interfering with.
I found out.
Plastic petal in the throat.

When I bought one of my previous Mk 5s there was a sock in place of the fuel cap. It was very slow to fill so I used a small video inspection camera to look down the filler neck and found a large handfull of......large pebbles. Kids eh !!!!! I used a grab tool to remove most of them using the camera as a guide, the rest fell into the tank but no more slow filling.

Isnt the throat of the filler pipe different on diesel vans from petrol ones?
seem to remember you cant get a petrol pump nozzle into a diesel filler ( or vice a versa )
maybe someone replaced the tank, or filler neck with a different one?

The petrol filler neck is smaller so fitting a diesel might help, but then again if it was working as intended the petrol filler neck should work ok.

Thanks for the replies all - I'll see if I can get hold of an inspection camera to see if I can work out whether there's a blockage in the neck somewhere

I'm having the same problem in my 1989 Ford Autosleeper motorhome. It seems to have got worse over the last 6 months. Anyone got a proper cure for it...
