Are all 6 stud axle diffs front loading?

Postby NeilsTransit » Fri Jul 20, 2018 9:36 am

G'day to you
It seems that there are 2 types of diffs on the VG model (Mk5). One unloads from the drive shaft end and the other loads from the back of the axle, I was wondering if the wheel studs indicate what type the diff is?
But hey what do I know, I'm only a gardener!

For Mk5 are two types diffs "Salisbury" with six studs.
One for single wheel, type 51, resambles light "Timken" (because of a double-race ball-bearing). Diff type 51 replaced in 1991 type 51A with two taper-roller bearings. Type 51 has load half-shaft.
Second diff it is "Salisbury" type 53 for double wheels, with two taper-roller bearings. It has unload half-shaft.
