overhaeting

Postby wobbles » Sat Aug 04, 2018 10:38 am

ok.... i have had my van 3 years 1996 mk5 2.5 turbo 100ps . it ran perfect for 2.5 years always staying bang in the middle of the temperature gauge range .
over the past 6 months the gauge will rise closer but not into the red area . the pipes dont get hard and are in perfect condition and it had a waterpump about 2k miles ago so i presume its perfect .

first i checked the thermostat and its working perfect .
second i changed the temperature sender and no change , still trying to overheat .
then i checked the viscous fan coupling and its good .

then i felt the radiator with my hand and it had warm and cold areas so i done a radiator flush but nothing changed
so today I put in a brand new radiator and still the gauge want to climb up to the letter A in the gauge !!!!!!

ihe weather is alot warmer , could it just be that simple ?

has anybody any ideas for me ?????????

thanks people

D'ya know mines doing the same.
My air con pump went last year so I removed the air con completely. This year it's been climbing to the to of the a.
I have electric fans but they are working fine. Mine is an auto though so put it down to the extra heat from the transmission fluid coupled with the hot weather. Going to fit an oil cooler to the gearbox when I get the chance.
Have already fitted a bypass switch and relay to the fans just in case.

I put a new radiator on last year so I know it's not that, I reckon it's just the hot weather.

a few people have told me that those transits are overcooled ,so and even in high temps i guess it should not get hot .
will see if anybody can shed any light on the case , i just dont want to damage the van or cause any other problems further down the line by the extra heat

this happened to me with my 2.5di, turned out the vanes on the inside of the water pump had come away meaning no water being pumped around. the old boy who sorted it said it was quite common on these engines.

really .....hmm interesting . the pump is quite new .........i think they can be changed on their own quite easily
i wonder if there is a upgraded pump with metal fins ?

The standard one has metal fins & on the turbo it uses a smaller pulley so it spins faster

ok .... so can the pump fins brake away for the pulley shaft ? might that be a plausible reason for my insufficient cooling ?

possibly.
The impeller disconects from the shaft and doesn't pump anything.
It can be checked/changed without messing with the timing belt.

Very unlikely if you only fitted a new water pump 2k ago unless you fitted cheap Chinese junk?
Then again everything is Chinese junk nowadays just some isn’t as cheap as others
Yours was running hot before the water pump was fitted so I would be looking elsewhere, where elsewhere is I don’t know
Is your fan shroud fitted ?? On turbo di,s they have a fan shroud fitted unlike the non turbos.

yeah shroud fitted . yeah the gauge .... it goes up and down as it should and when its getting hot i turn the cabin heating on full and the gauge
responds accordingly and starts to fall . unless its just maybe uncalibrated its self ?

Could be it's just right on the limit of what the cooling system can cope with.

That said, my NA conversion ran quite happily without the viscous fan fitted, the only time it ever showed signs of getting hot was a lovely toasty July day when slowed in traffic after a good M'way thrash - it was at that point I remembered I hadn't taken the winter radiator blanking cover out ....
