Windscreen washer not working

Postby Niccapotamus » Mon Aug 06, 2018 9:41 pm

Sorry if this has been asked before. New van to us, a 1996 camper,(it's our first one too) bought today and washer not working. I am hoping to do a 300 mile round trip Thursday to Monday this week and could do with some detailed pointers to a fix. Haven't got the Haynes manual yet as not enough time.

Thanks very much

You say not working but does the pump make a noise when button pressed but no water or is there nothing happening at all??
If there is a pump sound but just no water then check the jets aren’t blocked or more likely the filter gauge in the washer bottle is probably full of snot :o

usually one of 3 things
motor seized
wires to motor gone black thus ceasing to let current flow
the switch has gone faulty
or all 3
try a test bulb under wing as friend twaddles the switch

on my recovery truck i finally gave up and fitted a scrap yard washer bottle under the bonnet and rewired a toggle switch on the dash with new cabling

thanks - I'll have a poke around - without a manual it's a bit like peeing in the wind (likely to be messy).

especially as i generally lift a bonnet and think - yep it's an engine :) I probably need to improve this view now owning an old camper

You then need to check the fuse isn’t blown, someone will tell you which fuse I’m sure, it probably shows it on the fuse box cover lid, common for the fuse to blow if the washers are used in winter and the water frozen.
It may even just need the wiring plug on the pump wiggled (under left front wheel arch)
Try the simple things first :D

possibly a genius - having found out (google) where the fuse box is and also with your help.... there appears not to be a no 36.

maybe that's it. the "boss" is brining one back with her from the town :)

Just take a fuse from elsewhere and try it just make sure you no the donor fuse number or else something else won’t work  then again maybe not because it may blow that fuse and if you don’t have spares could be in a bit of a pickle ( always a good idea to have spare fuses in each size (Ebay) few pounds maximum

typically - a double bluff on the part of the van

replaced fuse - still no motor noise, or indeed water squirtage

wiggling wires next job :)
