Postby seph234 » Wed Aug 22, 2007 5:26 pm

hello i have a transit 1998 s reg its got the banana engine fitted.
the problems i have is that it takes a while to start and when it starts it is ticking over lumpy and it will only rev a silly amount to about just over normal tick over, i had a broken plastic elow that went into the egr valve i fixed this but would this pull any air into the system any help please. joe[/img]

Sounds like either your throttle cable has come loose or even worse, your timing belt has jumped :!:

When was the timing belt changed :?: When was the engine last serviced :?: (oil, fuel air filters etc...)

hello andyg thanks for the reply
I will explain a bit more i bought the van from a company i work alongside, it has been used as a site van crawling round at 15mph for a couple of years it has been serviced and the cambelt is ok, ive checked the throttle cable and that is ok. today i cracked the injectors off and got some air out and now it revs but seems like it is a bit choked up and there is quite a bit of white/grey smoke coming out of the back i dont know if it just needs a good run but the only problem ive got is it has no mot or tax so how can i give it a good run before an mot or is there anything i should be checking to cure the smoke cheers. joe

It's a valve that goes in the intake and are very often fitted in conjunction with a spark arrester, also it's my bad but it's spelt Chalwyn.

thanks for the reply im not sure i didnt see any extra valves
its got the air filter that runs upto the egr then that bolts onto the first part of the banana manifold that then bolts upto the main manifold on the head. joe

one of these,
http://www.chalwyn.co.uk/EN/diesel_fuel_shut_down.html

when i worked in fawley refinery some of the vehicles had these and spark arrestors.

also we left a vehicle running all day because the starter was dodgy. on the drive home the smoke cloud out the back was awsome.
your exhaust may be sooted up after two years of pottering around.
