turbo diesel engine swap

Postby Northfalia » Wed Jan 23, 2008 11:55 am

Hi, is the very early (1991 ish) turbo diesel engine with the bosch pump much more powerful than a normally aspirated banana diesel?
is there much i could do to the turbo motor to make it pull a bit better?
would it be best to swap the turbo assembly onto the banana engine?

yes the turbo has more poke

I believe the engines themselves are basically the same and you could swap the turbo stuff over if you wanted... might be worth swapping bosch pump too :)

Id bolt the turbo onto the banana engine

Fit the 100ps injectors, tweak the pump, and bin the EGR

nice one! thanks for these, am looking forward to getting it done, and getting up the road, i guess what i am after is mercedes sprinter performance for bedford rascal money, so are the banana pump and injectors the better ones?
have blanked the E.G.R, removed the butterfly and tweaked the pump on present engine, i do not mind the work of swapping the motors, but if i am not going to notice that much of a difference, then i shall not expect too much

when i turboed mine i notices a hell of a difference,

You would be better to source a set of 100ps injectors as your 76ps ones wont flow enough.

What injectors had the MK3 engine got in :?: If there the same as the banana engine one stick them in it and turn up the mid range a bit more,

Pull the bananas off and bolt on the TD inlet and pipework, fit the turbo (obviously  ), The exhaust is totally different on a TD (bigger bore), If it still dont go then turn up the max fueling 8)

:? hi guy's, always thought you couldn't just bolt the turbo onto a normally aspirated lump, higher pressure in turbo blows head gaskets :?: hope i'm wrong 'cos if you can, will an early di,think its a york 2.4? (got 4 glow plugs hidden inside inlet) take the turbo??
just imagine a yorkie with 4spd box and overdrive,be able to cruise at 60 all day  ,
really cant belive how informative you guy's are, kev..

the compression ratio is slightly lower on the TD but were not talking heaps of boost. Mine runs at 0.9 bar

Sorry..... i am here again.
My baby is made somewhere near march -91 and it is afterward assembled IHI turbo, (air)cooler, here in Finland whit 0.8 preasure and pump gained up 3/4 round, everything els is standard ford make, they added oil cooler also for tbo because tbo raise oiltemperature about 10-15 degrees celsius.

But however it wont run ower 140 km/h (87 mph) it sucks.

If you want to put tbo inyour engine, you smile is larger when climbing uphill som countryroad or highway, passing some limbing cosworth

what is banana engine, do i have that?????

Facts:
2.5 litre (non tbo engine)
engine (water) (block) heater
cabin air heater
skylight window (finland 2000)
and litelbit some electronic eguipment,inside
((1+8)mine use) or (1+9) (1+13 for scool transportuse) or (2+3+5) 3 is for wheelchair.

If it smokes, it works. But why....

Hi trans9, the banana engine thing is a reference to the inlet manifold of some diesel engines, which curves over the top of the engine like a bunch of bananas,
well, a bit, anyway
cheers

Yes,

no, the earlier engines are a stronger engine than the banana, and if its a turbo already even better
