power loss

Postby izzyeast » Mon Feb 23, 2009 8:34 pm

hi all. I have a 1998 2.5 tranny on an S plate that seriously lacks power, i have turned the fuel pump up 1.5 turns and opened the egr flap which helped, but i still cant go up hills without slowing down to 35/40mph which is in 3rd gear. Its better in the mornings but not much, and when you drive it you have to thrash it in every gear untill it fills like you have hit a power band before you change again but if you drop ut of this"power band" it just dies quickly.Any ideas would be much appriciated... its gets serviced regular oil ,filters etc

If you have turned up the pump 1.5 turns and it helped try giving it another half a turn, I turned mine up 2 turns and it made a big difference, Steve

Sounds like torque sleeve/piston sticking........

Have you looked inside the intake manifold? Made a big difrence when I cleaned it. Mine had 1/4" of crap stuck to the inside of the manifold, from when the EGR valve was fitted - Ive heard some can become completly blocked.

Yep like Frag says torque piston sticking in the sleeve is the favourite for a bosch pump.

The piston is second, the sleeve third from left.

Also there has been a couple of issues just recently with dodgy exhaust back boxes. Baffles have collapsed blocking the system and strangling power output.

i`ve finally done it!!! took 5 hours but got there in the end (dropped the inner washers in the engine, little blitters). the thrust sleeve cleaning done the trick, no more top end but accelerates up hills now. cheers everybody who helped ..

Excellent mate, thanks for letting us know. :D

Did you polish up the piston and bore or replace ?

Just dug out some pics to help. know its a little late now, but may help anyone reading this at a later stage :D

This pump is on my T-reg 190 hi-top. Is it the same one as in the photos above? If so, I was thinking of taking a look inside to see if the piston/sleeve thingie is stuck. If I take the four screws out does the whole thing explode in my face or is it just a case of gently easing it off and lifting out the bits? Is there a gasket that will tear when I take off the lid?

It might be my imagination, but after I turned the central screw ONE turn, there was a "slight" improvement in power. Maybe an extra 500 easy revs. Might be worth giving it another 3/4 turn.

thats the same pump as what i just done.Watch the 4 screws they burr if the screwdriver doesnt fit tight. there is a spring in there that pushes the top up but nothing else to worry about.. (he says, dont drop the 4 spacers when you get them out they hide every where). Its well worth doing this job its changed my van especially in the first 3 gears going up hills. I sanded the sleeve with 1500 wet and dry the polished up. the piston is a really tight fit when putting back in little tap helped with wood and hammer, good luck..

Thanks izzy. Didn't want to take a chance and end up wrecking the pump. As the great white whale is well down on power I think it is worth having a look at the piston/sleeve.
